Thank God for Guardian Angels

When I was a new adult, I set out for a job interview in my old 1978 Chevy Nova. Unfortunately, I never made it to the interview. I got in a car accident that totaled my car and left the steering wheel pressed against the driver’s seat.

I noticed that detail after I got out of the car entirely unharmed, not a scratch or bruise, not even a tear in my nylons.

“Beside each believer stands an angel as a protector and shepherd leading him to life.” ~Saint Basil the Great

Most of us will never see our guardian angel during our lifetime, but they are with us every moment of every day. Angels are God’s messengers and our constant companions. They protect us in so many ways, even though we are often not aware of it.

They pray with us and for us and help us to follow the right path, step by step. They want us to grow in holiness and to draw ever closer to God through Jesus Christ. Our guardian angels even communicate with us, though not in the same way we communicate with each other.

Our guardian angels can put thoughts into our minds and influence our feelings and imagination. Saint Ignatius of Loyola taught that they also communicate spiritual consolations to us.

From the Opus Sanctum Angelorum website: the angels communicate with us by causing a certain kind of tension or pressure in our soul or body. We may get the strong feeling that we just have to do something, or go somewhere, or help someone, or pray for a special intention. Many of us, to be sure, have experienced these feelings that seem to come out of nowhere, urging us to act decisively in order to help someone who may be in desperate danger or need.

When you take the time to evaluate a situation and prayerfully consider the best way to go, your guardian angel can more easily guide you. However, when we are accustomed to acting on impulse and doing whatever pleases us, it is harder to “hear” our guardian angel’s voice and respond to his promptings.

Take time today to thank God for your guardian angel and for all the guardian angels in the world today. It offers me great consolation to think of how many heavenly beings are with us in the world. Turn to your guardian angel often to thank him for taking good care of you. And commit yourself to listening to his voice from now on.

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

to whom God’s love commits me here.

Ever this day be at my side,

to light and guard, to rule and guide. AMEN

For more on our guardian angels, St. Bernard gave a touching sermon that can be found HERE.

So the Supreme Majesty has given charge to the angels. Yes, He has given charge to His own angels. Think of it! To those sublime beings, who cling to Him so joyfully and intimately, to His very own He has given charge over you! ~St. Bernard
